Harare Sports Club is more than just a sports venue—it’s a historic landmark in Zimbabwe’s capital city. Established in 1900, this iconic club has been the heartbeat of cricket and other sports for over a century. From hosting Rhodesia’s Currie Cup matches to Zimbabwe’s first Test victory, Harare Sports Club embodies tradition, resilience, and sporting excellence.

A Brief History

Originally known as Salisbury Sports Club until 1982, Harare Sports Club has played a pivotal role in shaping cricket in Zimbabwe. The first recorded first-class match took place in 1910, and by the mid-20th century, the ground was hosting Rhodesia’s home fixtures in South Africa’s prestigious Currie Cup.

After independence in 1980, the venue welcomed its first List A match, marking a new era. In 1992, Zimbabwe achieved Test status, and Harare Sports Club proudly hosted the nation’s inaugural Test against India. Just three years later, Zimbabwe celebrated its first-ever Test win here against Pakistan—a moment etched in cricket history.

The Venue’s Unique Charm

Set amid Jacaranda-lined streets, Harare Sports Club boasts a picturesque gabled pavilion and lush surroundings. Its location near the presidential palace and Royal Harare Golf Club adds to its prestige. While the permanent seating accommodates around 10,000 spectators, temporary stands have allowed record crowds of 26,000, as seen during the 1956 Rhodesia vs MCC clash.

The club’s social hub is the historic pavilion featuring The Centurion Bar, a favorite among fans, and the lively Castle Corner on the southern side. Today, it remains the headquarters of Zimbabwe Cricket and home to the Mashonaland Eagles.

Modern Upgrades

Harare Sports Club continues to evolve while honoring its legacy. In 2023, floodlights were installed for the Zim Afro T10, enabling night matches. The first-ever international game under lights—a T20I against Ireland—was played here in December 2023, marking another milestone.

Why Harare Sports Club Matters

Harare Sports Club is not just a cricket ground; it’s a symbol of Zimbabwe’s sporting spirit. With over a century of history, iconic matches, and modern innovations, it remains a cherished venue for players and fans alike.
